Gov’t proceeds with plans for fixed election date
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
Prime Minister Bruce Golding confirmed on Tuesday that he will be proceeding with plans to establish a fixed election date for general elections.
Mr. Golding told the House of Representatives that the matter was being reviewed by government's lawyers.
Following this there will be consultations with the parliamentary opposition.
But, according to the Prime Minister, in some instances the constitutional changes contemplated will require the support of the people in a referendum.
He was responding to a question posed by opposition Member of Parliament, Ronnie Thwaites.
The fixed election date was one of the commitments given in the campaign manifesto of the Jamaica Labour Party in the last general election.
